The Digital Media Festival in Nairobi on December 11, 2025
Kenya’s digital media sector is experiencing strong growth in 2025, driven by rising mobile penetration and increased engagement on social platforms, this is according to insights shared at the 9th Digital Media Festival and Awards Show in Nairobi.
Speaking at the event, Go Gaga Experiential & Digital Media Co-Founder Muthoni Mumo said the country has seen a “strong rebound” in social media activity this year, with millions of new users joining platforms.
She noted that mobile penetration has reached 83.5 per cent, supported by wider access to 4G and emerging 5G networks that are accelerating uptake across sectors, including fintech, health and e-commerce.
Muthoni added that although TV and radio continue to command substantial audiences, social media is increasingly a primary news source, particularly among younger users.
Platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and Instagram have recorded higher engagement following a slowdown in 2024, she said.
Rising smartphone use and faster broadband have also shaped advertising trends.
Muthoni said digital advertising is gaining ground on traditional outlets as brands adopt AI tools, video content and targeted, mobile-first strategies to improve return on investment.
The Digital Media Awards are scheduled for December 12 at The Tamarind Hotel Grounds in Nairobi.
The event will feature keynote addresses, masterclasses and panel discussions from industry figures including Loeries CEO Preetesh Sewraj, AdTech developer Stella Rose Mwangi, Turn Left Media Regional Director Nelly Ndonye, Samsung Electronics East Africa’s Ryan Mule, and EABL Senior Brand Manager Zipporah Ndungu.
This year’s festival has attracted partnerships with local and international brands.
The awards will also highlight emerging talent through The Student Awards, with nominees drawn from universities including the University of Nairobi, ADMI, Daystar University and USIU.
Young creatives will further be recognised under the Young Creative Awards category.
Muthoni said the digital media industry continues to shape public opinion and community engagement, noting “our work has the power to promote positive change and foster a global community that transcends borders.”
