USIU, AMLD Africa to host 3rd edition regional AI, Machine Learning conference

The United States International University Africa (USIU), in partnership with Applied Machine Learning Days (AMLD) Africa, is set to host the third edition regional AI and Machine Learning (ML) conference in Nairobi.

The event which is slated for February 27 – March 1, aims to underscore Africa’s dedication to owning AI developments of strategic projects in economic empowerment, culture preservation and healthcare sustainability.

Through a presser, AMLD Africa said it seeks to enable Africa to leapfrog existing challenges and establish itself as a leader in sustainable development and tech innovation.

The company noted that the event is tailored for a diverse audience, adding that it aims to focus on students and professionals from all fields, showcasing the wide applicability of AI.

Universities that will be in attendance include Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), KCA University, Mount Kenya University (MKU), the University of Nairobi (UON) and Zetech University.

“The students will have a chance to learn, network and engage through sessions tailored to the organized tracks; AI and healthcare, AI for cultural preservation and AI and sustainability and economic empowerment,” AMLD Africa said.

“We have also organised a community day where we will engage with different African communities and learn how they implement AI within their communities.”

“Professionals across, climate change, farming, healthcare, and policy-making, will also have a chance to network, attend workshops and engage in discussions and tracks highly relevant to them.”

With support from Google and Norvatis, AMLD Africa is also set to showcase the continent’s innovation spirit to foster community building across Africa.

“This is not just a conference but a milestone that showcases Africa’s pivotal role in the global AI landscape and its commitment to leveraging its rich human resources and talents,” the company added.

The workshops and discussions will involve understanding the disruptive impact of recent foundation models on drug discovery and medical access as well as discovering how AI can be used to improve maternal health or help in the fight against malaria.

They will also involve uncovering the potential of AI for preserving the diversity and richness of Africa’s heritage and discovering how African-led efforts have leveraged geospatial data to address pressing issues such as water scarcity, reliable weather forecasts and their implications in farming.
