In celebration of Earth Day, Google has released data highlighting the top sustainability-related trends in Kenya.

The data has revealed a growing interest in environmental issues, as Kenyans search for answers to questions and learn more about pressing issues affecting our planet.

According to a presser, Kenyans continue to demonstrate a strong desire to understand environmental terms and concepts.

These include climate change and global warming.

“Both of these issues have a significant impact on the world's environment, economy, and society,” the statement read.

In Kenya, the most asked questions on Google include:

  3. 3. What causes global warming?
  4. 4. What is the Paris Agreement?
  5. 5. What is Kenya doing about climate change?

Google's data also highlighted the top trending topics in Kenya.

It revealed a growing interest in topics such as soil contamination, having topped the list, and had a significant increase in searches, which is particularly relevant in our agricultural sector.

It also showed that Kenyans are actively searching for information on environmental, social, and corporate governance, highlighting a shift towards responsible business practices.

According to the International Red Cross, drawing from the 2022 drought in Kenya which was the worst in 40 years, it remains a pressing concern.

The drought affected over 23 million people, about 40 per cent of the population, causing widespread food insecurity, livestock deaths, and displacement.

Google Kenya’s top trending topics include:

Google country director Agnes Gathaiya said climate change is one of humanity’s most urgent challenges and it is important to have individual and collective action.

“Earth Month is an opportunity for all of us to consider how we can make a difference,” she said.

“By providing accessible information on environmental topics, we hope to empower Kenyans to take action for a more sustainable future. It's not just about what Google does; it's about how we can all work together to protect our planet."

Gathaiya said the data highlights Kenya's growing awareness and commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.

“As the country faces unique challenges in combating climate change, such as droughts and soil contamination, the increased attention to these issues is a testament to the growing public engagement on Earth Day and beyond,” she said.
