Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka has urged the government to take legal action against those in power that are involved in the condemned sugar scandal.
Speaking on Citizen Tv on Monday, Onyonka said that the president needs to stand up for the people of Kenya.
"Great leadership is a leader who can stand up even when it is least expected for him to stand up for the people who voted for him," Onyonka said.
Onyonka talked about previous regimes having not been believed by Kenyans.
He said that if Kenya Kwanza wants to be seen as a regime that is law-abiding, can fight corruption, and is believed by Kenyans, they should take notable action.
"The president should have these people arrested and give them their due process," he said.
Onyonka said that if the president takes action against corrupt people, corruption will come down to as low as 3 percent.
"I believe President William Ruto can do a better job because people respect him and others fear him," Onyonka said.
His remarks come after President Ruto's government suspended 27 officials in connection with the illegal sugar.
The sugar in question was imported to the country in 2018 but was flagged by KEBS for want of expiry date specification.
Kebs marked the 20,000-50 kgs bags of sugar as unfit for human consumption.
Suspects arrested for the unprocedural release of condemned sugar into the market will on Monday be arraigned.
Detectives aware of the probe said investigations into the sugar scandal have been completed.
The case file has also been forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions who is expected to approve charges against the suspects.
