POV, you just put your fresh fruits and vegetables in the fruit tray, and after a few days, tiny brown pesky critters swarm up above them and around your kitchen.

Have you ever wondered what those creatures are?

Fruit flies are clumsy fliers that can be easily eliminated with simple steps; do some cleaning, find their food source, and lay a trap to bait them with.

They are attracted to sweets, vegetables, and fresh fruit, especially when they are overripe.

This is because the fermenting process is a strong attraction for them.

If you find them in your house, just know they have found a source to feed and lay their eggs on.

Step 1: Clean up

To effectively get rid of fruit flies, you will need to find what they are feeding on in your home and remove it immediately.

Wash the kitchen counters and fruit bowls often with soap and water and wipe up spills that occur when cooking.

Be diligent in keeping your dust bin clean and kitchen sinks and drains clean. Pour boiling water.

Step 2: Be careful

Do not leave beverage bottles, cans, and glasses filled with juices, soda, wine, sweet liquors, or beer sitting around; these are their big attractions.

Step 3: Get rid of the garbage

Remember to take out your garbage daily until you have control over the problem.

Ensure you do not leave your garbage in the open and spray a mixture of water and vinegar around your garbage area, both inside and out. Keep it covered and if possible.

Always rinse cans and bottles before placing them in the recycling bins.

Step 4: Create homemade traps

  1. 1. Leave out a bowl of vinegar with a couple of drops of citrus-smelling liquid dish detergent. This attracts them and they drown.
  1. 2. Cider Vinegar; mix a cup of water, apple cider vinegar, and 2 tsp dishwashing liquid. Sprinkle the mixture close to the fresh produce.
  2.
  3. 3. Fresh Bait; place a piece of cut fruit in a jar then roll a piece of paper into a funnel (cutting the bottom tip so there is an entry) and place it into the kitchen top away from fruits.

Fruit flies are most active during the day and are attracted to light.

To keep them away from your kitchen, it is important to find all their food sources, because they may lay eggs that will hatch later.
