Femicide has been defined as intentional killing with a gender-related motivation; and it can take different forms, such as the murder of women as a result of intimate partner violence.

In the face of escalating femicide cases in Kenya, it is imperative that we move away from a culture of victim-blaming and delve into comprehensive research to unravel the motivations behind these heinous acts.

While financial disputes may be a factor, jumping to conclusions without understanding the root causes is counterproductive.

The recent surge in femicide demands a nuanced approach that goes beyond attributing these tragic incidents solely to financial motives.

Instead, a deeper examination is needed to comprehend the multifaceted motivations behind such brutal killings. It is essential to recognise that in typical situations involving financial fraud, murder is not the customary solution.

The overarching concern should be the safety of all individuals, regardless of their background or profession. From commercial sex workers to mothers at home and girls traversing the streets, everyone should feel secure in their interactions.

Cautioning and warning girls about meeting strangers raises a pertinent question – were those in stable relationships and marriages not once strangers themselves?

The core issue lies not in meeting strangers or exploring relationships but in ensuring the availability of safe environments.

As we advocate caution, it is equally important to remind everyone not to resort to violence. Upholding basic human rights should be non-negotiable, and the act of taking another person's life must be unequivocally condemned.

Femicide is an abhorrent crime that requires collective condemnation and urgent societal introspection.

In fostering a safer environment, it is crucial to address the root causes of violence rather than placing the burden solely on potential victims.

By emphasising empathy, understanding and the preservation of human life, we can strive towards a society where everyone, regardless of gender, feels secure in their daily interactions.

Let us stand united against femicide and work towards a future where safety is a universal priority.
