Ever noticed how, when pointing out what’s ailing our society, Kenyans tend to first cite the west as an example of what should be done right. Admittedly, the west seems to have gotten many things right. But we forget to look at the bigger picture.
These are people who basically grew, and continue growing, rich by exploiting others. Should we even be citing them as a standard to aspire to? But what’s sad is how we, the exploited, have chosen to ape the worst of the west to our own detriment.
Where did the values of our forefathers go? They may not have been perfect but the little I’ve read about traditional African society shows a people who were more humane than what we, their descendants, have become.
I find myself wondering, if we had stuck to the good in traditional African societies and added to that the good from the west—Christianity—where would we be as a people? Instead, we have become corrupt and selfish. Everyone looks out for number one.
And we cheer, sometimes to the point of worshipping, the people who champion corruption and selfishness—political leaders and, increasingly, religious leaders.
The saddest part about all this is, we seem to have reached a point of no return. No one wants to give up their selfish ways because, you will be living in poverty while others swim in ill-gotten money, so why bother? Let’s all go rogue, everyone for himself and God for us all.
