In Summary

•By caning them, teachers instil fear in them, they develop negative attitudes towards tutors which in turn interferes with their academic performance.

•To curb these cases, school committees, school heads, teachers service commission and the education sector at large, should stand firm and protect the rights of children.

Victim of child abuse

Reports of students and pupils being injured by teachers in school during caning have been on the rise.

All these are happening as a result of non-adherence to the rule of law by teachers as highlighted in the Constitution.

Everyone is prone to mistakes but beating someone to a point of death is prohibited.

The health of these children is important as well as their education.

Healthwise some of them are weak, and beating them can deteriorate the situation.

Some of the children end up dying after being caned for some petty mistakes that can be corrected by different forms of punishment.

Children are also affected emotionally and psychologically.

By caning them, teachers instil fear in them; they develop negative attitudes towards tutors which in turn interferes with their academic performance.

To curb these cases, school committees, school heads, teachers service commission and the education sector at large, should stand firm and protect the rights of children.

Immediate action should be taken against teachers found harassing children in schools.

Children should also report teachers who harass and threaten them because the rule of law will protect them.
