As the Fifa World Cup kicks off tomorrow, it is time for Kenya — and Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba — to ask; what if Harambee Stars were in Qatar?

The euphoria surrounding the tournament has engulfed the world, with Kenyans all over social media making World Cup banter. Unfortunately, we can only dream of Harambee Stars at the grandest stage.

The World Cup, therefore, couldn’t have come at a better time for Namwamba.

We are currently under Fifa suspension due to a clash of egos between former Cabinet Secretary for Sports Amina Mohamed and Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa. Our game has stalled in the past year.

Namwamba must work us back into play, ensure we compete at the top continental level, the only path to the World Cup.

Africa has five of the 32 teams in Qatar and even though we are all sick of sitting out, it would not be wishful thinking to work towards future World Cups.

The Africa Cup of Nations, however, should form our first target even as the question of whether the country has what it takes to dream of 2026 World Cup in US, Mexico and Canada.
