• On Monday, General Muhoozi tweeted that the Ugandan army could capture Nairobi within two weeks

• Yesterday he tweeted again saying that he was only joking abut capturing Nairobi

On Monday, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Museveni, irritated Kenyans when he tweeted that the Uganda army could capture Nairobi in two weeks and export Revolution to Kenya.

Earlier this year he tweeted in support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and of the Tigrayan rebellion in Ethiopia.

These tweets cannot be laughed off as the erratic utterances of an immature young man.

First, his tweets are not serious. If the Ugandan army invaded Kenya, it would get bogged down, just like the Russian army in Ukraine.

Second, Muhoozi is allegedly being groomed to take over from his father when he retires. He needs to demonstrate that he is presidential material. Otherwise citizens and leaders will not take him seriously.

Third, President Museveni is a Pan-Africanist and keen on further integration of East Africa and the continent. Muhoozi may have been joking but the effect of his tweets is to make Uganda appear militaristic and keen on dominating East Africa. Kenyans now fear him. Muhoozi's tweets have made political unification of East Africa less likely, not more likely.

Muhoozi should be more cautious with his utterances if he expects a political future.
