Education is the key to unlocking the full potential of a country as it empowers individuals, lifts families out of poverty, and drives economic growth and development.

Siaya county is home to an abundance of talent, potential, and promise. Our children are the heartbeat of our community, and it is our duty to ensure that each and every one of them has the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their financial circumstances.

However, we cannot ignore the stark reality that many families in our county struggle to make ends meet. For these families, providing their children with a quality education can be a daunting challenge. Yet, education is the cornerstone of progress, the pathway to a brighter future for both individuals and society as a whole.

The significance of bursaries for our needy yet bright children in Siaya county is a matter that lies close to my heart. It is a matter of great importance, not just for the present, but for the future prosperity and development of our beloved county.

Bursaries provide a lifeline to those students who might otherwise be forced to abandon their dreams due to financial constraints. They level the playing field, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has the chance to pursue their academic ambitions.

My administration has laid strong emphasis that no deserving child will be denied the right to access education. I have allocated Shs 110 million for bursaries that has directly supported a total of 14,000 needy students. This allocation signifies an improvement of 33 per cent from the previous year’s allocation.

But it's not just about access to education; it's also about nurturing talent and rewarding hard work. In Siaya county, we are blessed with an abundance of bright and talented young minds. These are the students who excel academically, who demonstrate a thirst for knowledge and a determination to succeed against all odds.

By investing in bursaries, we are investing in the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers of our county. We are giving these deserving students the support they need to excel academically and to fulfil their potential. And in doing so, we are not only transforming their lives but also the future trajectory of our county.

Bursaries provide much-needed financial assistance to students from low-income families, enabling them to access quality education without the burden of exorbitant fees.

They cover tuition fees, the purchase of textbooks and other learning materials, as well as other educational expenses that might otherwise be out of reach for many families. This ensures that no child is denied the opportunity to learn simply because of their financial situation.

But let us not forget that bursaries are not just a handout; they are an investment in our collective future. When we empower our young people with education, we invest in a brighter, more prosperous future for Siaya county.

By investing in bursaries, we are investing in the human capital of our county, ensuring that our young people have the skills, knowledge, and opportunities they need to succeed in the 21st-century economy.

But the benefits of bursaries extend far beyond the individual recipients. When we invest in education, we are investing in the future prosperity and well-being of our entire community. Educated individuals are more likely to secure stable employment, earn higher incomes, and contribute positively to society.

They are also more likely to be engaged in civic life, participate in community development initiatives, and give back to their communities in meaningful ways.

Moreover, bursaries help to address the issue of inequality and social exclusion by providing equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their socioeconomic background. In doing so, they help to build a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the chance to succeed and thrive.

As the governor I'm committed to ensuring that every child in Siaya county has access to quality education and the support they need to reach their full potential. That is why my administration has prioritised education investment and allocated significant resources to support bursary programmes for needy students.

But the government alone cannot solve this problem. We need the support and cooperation of all stakeholders – parents, teachers, community leaders, and the private sector – to ensure the success of our bursary programmes. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our children and build a brighter future for Siaya county.

Let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting bursaries for our needy and bright children in Siaya county. Let us ensure that no child is left behind, that every talent is nurtured, and that every dream is within reach. Together, let us build a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
