It's Valentine's Day and the air is filled with the sweet fragrance of roses and the anticipation of exchanging tokens of love. Yet, amidst the traditional expressions of affection, it's crucial to recognise that love is not only about grand gestures but also about responsible choices.

This Valentine's Day, let's transcend the conventional and explore the significance of contraception and condoms in fostering a healthy and loving relationship.

International Condom Day, celebrated on February 13, serves as a reminder that love and intimacy go hand in hand with responsibility. It emphasises the importance of promoting safe and consensual practices in relationships.

Condoms, often considered a symbol of protection, play a vital role not only in preventing unintended pregnancies but also in safeguarding against sexually transmitted infections.

While flowers, chocolates and thoughtful gifts are cherished expressions of love, the gift of protection is equally meaningful. In the spirit of true love, couples can embark on a journey of open communication about contraception and choose methods that align with their mutual well-being.

This Valentine's Day, let's break the stigma surrounding conversations about safe sex and prioritise each other's health.

Contraception is a shared responsibility that empowers couples to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. From hormonal methods to barrier methods like condoms, the choices are diverse, catering to different needs and preferences. By embracing this shared responsibility, couples can nurture trust, understanding and mutual respect.

Condoms, often overlooked as mere contraceptives, deserve recognition as symbols of love and protection. Beyond their role in preventing unplanned pregnancies, condoms create an environment of trust and care between partners.

They enhance intimacy by ensuring both partners' physical health and well-being, fostering a deeper connection built on shared responsibility.

It is important to celebrate love with safe choices. This Valentine's Day, let's celebrate love in its entirety—the passion, the laughter, the shared dreams and the commitment to each other's health.

By embracing safe choices, couples strengthen the foundation of their relationships, demonstrating that love goes beyond the surface and extends into the realm of responsible and caring partnerships.

This year make and take a contraceptive vow. This is my contraceptive vow: "When I am sexually active, I will use a contraception method correctly and consistently as recommended from a health facility. As I plan my budget, my month, my year, I will visit a doctor to get a method of my choice that works for me and fits me. It is possible and I will do it.

"I promise to stock up condoms; all types, all sizes, for myself, my partner. I am not ready to get pregnant, and I will not make anyone pregnant until I am ready. This is my decision, a healthy decision in my life. This is my top priority, to protect myself and you, my partner. I must sort myself, lazima nijisort na contraceptive! This is my vow."

As we exchange tokens of affection and revel in the romantic ambiance of Valentine's Day, let's not forget the essence of love – a holistic commitment to each other's happiness and well-being.

Beyond flowers, love, and gifts, responsible choices and safe practices are integral aspects of a truly loving relationship. Here's to a Valentine's Day filled with love, intimacy and a shared commitment to a healthier and happier future.
