Garissa township MP Dekow Mohamed Barrow and other party supporters

Garissa Township MP Dekow Mohamed Barrow on Tuesday sensationally said that the Kenya Kwanza MPs will table a motion in parliament that will seek to extend President William Ruto’s term by one more year.

Speaking in Garissa town, the UDA MP said that they have the numbers to do that and will embark on the assignment in the house.

“As MPs from Kenya Kwanza, we can bring a motion in parliament that will seek to extend Ruto’s presidency by one year to 2028. This is to compensate the one year that has been lost through demonstrations orchestrated by the opposition,” he said.

“And you know we have the numbers in the house. As you we are a  total of 349 and no MP wants to face an election. We all want to remain there.”

He added:

“Because the opposition has decided to play hardball, we will show them that we can equally do the same. So wananchi should be prepared to have the election in August 2028 and not in 2027. One year has been lost talking about Raila."

Dekow further asked President Ruto not to let anyone intimidate him saying that as his MPs, they remain steadfast in defending his administration in outside parliament.

He scoffed at Azimio Leader Raila Odinga and his lieutenants describing them as a ‘bunch of jokers’ singling out Roots party Leader George Wajackoya.

His comments come barely a day after Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi on Monday reminded President William Ruto that by December 2023, he will have three years and six months left on his term.

"Dear Ruto: Christmas, you will have only three-and-a-half years left. And you will have achieved nothing. When will you start work? Christmas?" he asked.

Ruto was inaugurated on September 2022 following his win in the August general elections.

Ngunyi went on to state that the rebellion against Ruto was now being fueled by the courts.

"The rebellion virus is now an epidemic powered by the courts. They killed CASs, then suspended the Finance Act 2023. And there is Raila," he said.

This comes after the High Court on Monday indefinitely suspended the Finance Act,2023 after declining to lift the freeze imposed on June 30.

High Court judge Mugure Thande declined to lift the suspension as prayed by Treasury CS Njuguna Ndungu stating that Kenyans might be unfairly subjected to taxes that might be found to be unlawful.

This is as Azimio leader Raila Odinga is expected to launch a signature collection drive to serve as a testament to Kenyans' dissatisfaction with President William Ruto’s regime.
