As Kenya marks 62 years since attaining internal self-rule, the nation is pausing to reflect, celebrate, and renew its collective commitment to the dreams of its founding fathers and mothers.
This year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, held in Homa Bay County, carry the theme “Securing the Dream – 62 Years of Progress and Promise”, spotlighting the country’s strides in governance, security, and economic transformation.
The commemoration pays tribute to Kenya’s independence heroes and the dedicated men and women who continue to bring the nation’s vision to life.
While Kenya has grown more united, prosperous, and secure, the government acknowledges the ongoing task of lifting every citizen out of poverty.
Anchored in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), the government has prioritised grassroots service delivery and security as the foundation for sustainable development.
The Ministry of Interior and National Administration, under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, has reinforced the critical role of National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) in delivering government services.
The recent operationalisation of administrative units and the establishment of the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) are key milestones in enhancing service efficiency, improving staff welfare, and expanding peacebuilding capabilities.
Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs, now better equipped and supported, are at the frontline of policy enforcement, community engagement, and national cohesion.
The choice of Homa Bay County as host underscores the region’s strategic importance in Kenya’s Blue Economy.
Government efforts in collaboration with the county leadership have spurred growth around Lake Victoria, with the Kenya Coast Guard Services (KCGS) base in Mbita playing a pivotal role in improving maritime security and curbing illegal activities.
Plans to boost KCGS capacity and strengthen inter-agency coordination will further unlock opportunities in lake transport, tourism, and fishing.
Addressing long-standing administrative gaps, the Ministry is working to operationalise gazetted units across the country, including Homa Bay, despite budgetary constraints.
Through phased implementation, more communities will gain access to essential services and enhanced security.
The government has also taken steps to tackle career stagnation among NGAOs, promote merit-based advancement, and offer relevant training to empower officers.
In appreciation of the sacrifices made by Kenya’s security personnel, the government has rolled out comprehensive reforms to improve their welfare.
These include salary increases, mobility solutions through the leasing of 5,000 vehicles, improved housing via 17,000 units under the Affordable Housing Programme, and enhanced medical coverage.
Such investments underscore the government’s commitment to fostering a secure, well-equipped, and motivated security force.
As the nation celebrates this significant milestone, Kenyans are urged to continue championing peace, unity, and development.
The government remains resolute in addressing isolated security threats and ensuring that every Kenyan enjoys the fruits of freedom, justice, and progress.
Happy Madaraka Day!
Principal Secretary Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo.
