Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif has appealed to agencies to focus on recovery programs during this rainy season.
Heavy rains continue to pound many parts of the Northeastern region after five seasons of failed rains.
Departments of water, livestock, and agriculture reported good rainfall in sub-counties, but roads and infrastructure have been damaged.
Several families have also been left homeless especially those living along River Daua.
Weak animals have also not been spared as they have all died further complicating matters for the residents who largely depend on livestock keeping for survival.
It is for this reason that the governor while speaking in Mandera town on Tuesday called for humanitarian support from all agencies.
“Over 80% of surface water infrastructure in our county has water due to heavy rains, causing flash floods in communities near River Daua. We urge residents to take precautions and stay safe."
He added:
“While we are deeply grateful for the good rainfall, we recognize the challenges posed by the damage to our roads and infrastructure. It is for this reason that our teams will continue closely monitoring the situation and swing into action when need be."
The governor said the county’s priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of the people during this rainy season.
He said his administration will work closely with all agencies to provide swift relief and recovery programs to affected communities and restore normalcy as soon as possible.
On Saturday last week, Deputy Governor Dr Ali Maalim chaired a County Steering Group meeting where the impact of heavy rains on the communities was discussed.
