More than 1,000 women suffering from fistula complications in 12 Rift Valley and Western counties have been treated by an American NGO.
Fistula is a tear in a woman’s bladder, rectum or vagina that causes leak in urine or faeces.
Onebyone spent Sh100 million treating the women, international programmes executive director Carolyn Anderman said.
She spoke in Eldoret yesterday during training for representatives and victims from Western counties.
Anderman said the NGO has carried out awareness campaigns and training programmes on fistula.
She said more than 300,000 women suffer from fistula in Kenya, with thousands of new cases reported every year.
“Many women who have this condition are unaware it’s treatable. Some suffer and die without ever seeking medication,” Anderman said.
“That is why five years ago, we embarked on the programme. Some 270,000 community members have been trained.”
Fistula is mainly caused by prolonged labour, botched caesarean sections and sexual assault.
