We have no land to bury him, says family of Garissa victim

The family of one of the victims of the April 2 Garissa University massacre has not buried him yet because they do not have land.

Oliver Maina is among nine students from Trans Nzoia county killed in attack.

Those buried on Saturday include Diana Musabi from Muungano village, Kiminini, Elizabeth Musinai (Aruba) and James Ochode (Namanjalala village. Others are Eliud Wafula, Faith Chepchirchir, Isaac Chepkosgei and Yvonne Makori all from Cherangany and Obed Okodoi from Maridadi in Kwanza constituency.

Maina's family lives in a rental house in Kiminini town.

He was raised by a single parent, Margaret.

Reuben Mudagala, a former councillor and the family's neighbour, said Maina was to be buried on Saturday with others but the family did not have anyhere to bury him.

“We have started arrangements for fundraising to enable the family buy a piece of land to bury the boy,” he told the star.

Mudagala said the body is at St Michael’s Funeral Home. It was transported from Nairobi on Thursday.

“The family is extremely poor and we are urging the government, county government and other donors to intervene and help us bury him,” said Mudagala.

Governor Patrick Khaemba and area MP Chris Wamalwa have promised to help the family bury Maina.

The county government gave each of the family of the nine victims Sh50,000 for burial expenses.
