A section of members of the Maasai community have pledged to safeguard property ahead of anticipated June 25 protests, warning against destruction of property.

The members of Maa Unity Agenda protested what they described as habitual, deliberate looting, destruction of property, violence, and harm to individuals during demonstrations.

They announced a ‘linda mali’ initiative which they said was intended to safeguard residents’ and investors’ properties not only in Kitengela town but the entire Kajiado County.

“As the Maa Unity Agenda, we are here to amplify the voice of the Maa community who are domiciled in Kajiado, on issues of demonstrations that have led to concerns over property destruction, especially in Ongata Rongai, Ngong and Kiserian,” Maa Unity Agenda national chairman Jonathan Ole Pasha said when he addressed the press in Kitengela.

The residents and investors alleged that some politicians have been ferrying individuals to towns to commit unlawful activities during demos.

“We strongly condemn the individuals presented as peaceful demonstrators who aren’t from Kajiado but other urban areas,” Pasha said.

These sentiments come at a time when the opposition has announced several peaceful marches across the country scheduled for June 25.

“We are here as leaders, peaceful people of Kajiado condemning violent demonstrations. We aren’t going to support. We expect the government to ensure peaceful coexistence and not violent demonstrations,” Pasha said.

“Be warned, if you have been brought from other areas to damage property in Kitengela, we will deal with you. We are fully supporting the government in maintaining peace and order. We know it is a constitutional right to picket and demonstrate; but we do not support actions that involve harm to people or damage shops and businesses in Kitengela and other urban centres in Kajiado,” Pasha said.

Maa Unity Agenda, Kaputei chapter chairman Godfrey Ole Ntapayia, said the property destruction by individuals during past demonstrations had pushed them as residents and investors from Kajiado to the wall.

“We will come to protect our property. We can not allow our property to be destroyed. We are not protecting wananchi or them but our property, businesses. Those coming to damage our property, be ready. Come with tools; you do not know what I will come equipped with.

"We will keep vigil. None of our property will be destroyed. If the government is ready to help us, it’s okay; if not, we are okay to protect our property, Operation Linda Mali,” Ntapayia said.
