Lands CS Alice Wahome opens Nyandarua lands office as 27,000 title deeds issued/HANDOUT

Residents of Nyandarua County are set to access land services closer to home following the official opening of the county’s first lands office by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome.

The new office, located in Ol Kalou, marks a major shift in land administration in the county and is expected to reduce the burden residents have faced for decades while seeking services from neighbouring stations.

Speaking during the launch, Wahome said the establishment of the office is intended to improve access to land services, enhance efficiency and bring government services closer to wananchi.

"For more than six decades, residents of Nyandarua have endured the inconvenience of travelling long distances to access land services and title deeds from Nyahururu and other nearby land offices," a statement by the ministry said.

The new office is expected to ease congestion, shorten travel distances and accelerate service delivery.

At the same event, the government issued 27,000 title deeds to beneficiaries from colonial villages in a move aimed at strengthening land ownership rights and promoting economic empowerment.

The issuance of the title deeds is aimed at providing legal ownership to thousands of families, enabling them to invest, access credit and secure their land tenure.

Government officials said land ownership remains central to unlocking economic opportunities and supporting long-term development in communities.

The Ministry also announced significant progress in transferring land records to support operations at the new office.

According to officials, out of more than 400,000 land records earmarked for transfer, about 296,000 have already been moved from Nyahururu to the newly established Ol Kalou office.

The transfer aims at improving efficiency and ensuring residents can access services without travelling outside the county.

Wahome said decentralisation of government services remains part of efforts to strengthen public service delivery and make key government functions more accessible to citizens.

The event brought together senior national and county government officials, among them Lands and Physical Planning Principal Secretary Generali Nixon Korir, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano.

Other leaders present were Nyandarua Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha, Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Wairimu Gitau and Roads Principal Secretary Joseph Mbugua.

Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria and other political leaders also attended the event.

Officials described the opening of the office and issuance of title deeds as a milestone in expanding access to land services and reinforcing secure land ownership in the county.

The government said the move aligns with ongoing efforts to decentralise services and support socio-economic growth through improved access to public services and secure land tenure.
