Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has urged Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to join the government, emphasizing the need for unity and collective progress in Kenya.

Speaking during the launch of a rural electrification project in Machakos County on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Wandayi highlighted that the Kamba community should not be left behind as the country advances.

“President William Ruto has demonstrated the importance of national unity by forming an inclusive government. That’s why he’s opened a new chapter of leadership,” Wandayi told the gathering at Kayumbani area in Mikuyu village.

The project, hosted by Machakos Town MP Caleb Mule, will connect about 118 households in the constituency to the national grid. It’s part of the government’s ongoing effort, through the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), to ensure no region is left in the dark.

Wandayi said the Last Mile Connectivity Project would not only power homes but also boost small and medium-sized enterprises across the country, aligning with President Ruto’s BETA program to achieve universal electricity access.

“Leadership must include every Kenyan, every community, and every region,” Wandayi said.

“You know, I was once in the opposition, even leading a fierce opposition team in Parliament. But now I’m here as a minister because I believe in working together for progress. The Kamba community has always been known for hard work and resilience. It’s unthinkable that while the country is moving forward, Kambas would be left behind. We must move forward together as Kenyans, with Ukambani fully involved.”

He added, “That’s why I support my friend, Mule, in calling for Kalonzo Musyoka to join the government so we can work together. Election politics will come later. For now, as leaders in government, we are focusing on development.”

Wandayi affirmed that President Ruto’s administration has a comprehensive development plan covering every corner of the country.

“The President has directed us to ensure development reaches all counties, constituencies, and wards without discrimination,” he said.

The Energy CS revealed that Machakos County had been allocated Sh1.4 billion for electrification in the current financial year, with more than Sh120 million earmarked for Machakos Town constituency alone.

He stressed that electricity is no longer a luxury but a necessity that drives economic growth.

“When homes have power, children can study without interruption and excel in their exams, while youth, women, and men can start small businesses that create opportunities and fuel local economies. As a government, we are committed to ensuring that electricity reaches every Kenyan without bias,” Wandayi said.

The project is expected to bring transformative benefits to communities across Machakos County, underscoring the government’s push for inclusive development.
