Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said that the 749 kilometre Isiolo-Mandera road that is under construction will be a game changer to the economy of the northern Kenya region.
Speaking on Tuesday, during an inspection visit, Kindiki said that while many people thought it was impossible to do it, the project is coming to life.
He insisted that the project will improve the region’s economy and connect it that of the rest of the country.
The DP also noted that it will increase and improve trade with neighbouring countries like Ethiopia and Somalia.
“This road is going to connect Isiolo to Mandera; many people thought it was not possible. From what I am seeing, I want to confirm to the people of Kenya that this is going to be a game changing project.
“It will open northeastern Kenya, improve the economy of the area, improve security and integrate the economy of northern Kenya with the rest of the country, it will create jobs, and it will make it easier for the movement of people and goods and improve trade between Kenya, Ethiopia, and even Somalia,” Kindiki said.
The Deputy President added that once complete, the Sh100 billion road will also change the country’s fortunes, as the region will also greatly contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He further stated that the project is as a result of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s belief that roads are key enablers of socio-economic growth.
“Once complete, this road will change the economic fortunes of Kenya because the northern part has huge potential to contribute to the GDP of the country, the problem has been poor road network, poor infrastructure, but this government is determined to complete this project in time to open up this area for economic transformation. Roads are one of the multipliers and enablers of socio-economic development.”
Kindiki said the road construction is being carried out by 11 contractors and should be complete by 2027. It is the longest single road project in Kenyan history.
The DP also noted that the northern Kenya region is also being opened up for more connectivity in terms of electricity.
He cited Isiolo County, where the state is set to connect electricity at the cost of Sh1.1 billion.
