Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has admitted to making mistakes while serving as the country's second in command.

According to Gachagua, he has now learnt who to trust and who not.

He alluded to the remarks about hiring people who were just being nice to him after he got into office instead of looking for people he knew very well.

The former DP said that these are the same people who ended up betraying him after they were bought by the people who wanted him out of office.

“In the lessons of betrayal.  We have learnt whom to trust. You must be very careful to bring people into your private life, secrets and what you believe in. You must take time. To employ a Personal Assistant is somebody you must have known for a very long time, their character, integrity behaviour.

“I made so many mistakes in high office. People who were talking nicely to me, I brought them into my life and allowed them into my inner space, and they are the ones who were brought to betray me,” Gachagua said.

He, however, noted that he is now wiser and thankful to God for the lessons.

The former Deputy President added that he has since become cautious about who he lets into his inner circle going forward.

“I am now a very wise person. I thank God some of these things happened, and I look at life differently and I'm extremely cautious who I let near me.”

Gachagua served as the country’s second DP for about two and a half years before he was impeached in October 2024.

Following his impeachment, Gachagua has since joined the opposition and is among the leaders who are very critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

He has been busy meeting with other opposition leaders as they push for a united opposition to face President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

He insists that their unity is what will save the country from its current predicament.
