A family in Ruiri in Meru County is in agony after their kin was jailed in Egypt after her documents reportedly expired.

Lynette Makena was jailed after her visa expired while she was still in the northern African country.

Family says Makena travelled to Egypt in 2017 with her partner, a Tanzanian national.

They two are said to have been blessed with a daughter but their relationship soon fell apart.

“The little girl became very ill and Makena used all the money she had in medical expenses for her baby. Her work contract expired during that time,” Makena’s uncle John Muthuiya told NTV.

Makena faced more problems when her visa expired. She was arrested in April for being in the country illegally after authorities launched a crackdown on foreigners without requisite documents.

The family is now appealing to the government, through the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, to intervene and bring Makena and her daughter back to the country.

“We are hurting. We are appealing to the government to intervene in the matter,” Muthuiya added.

Media reports said several other Kenyans who were arrested in the crackdown are still in custody.
