The Kenya Power and Lightning Company has said it will partner with relevant state agencies in a bid to end vandalism of critical national infrastructure.

The company's managing director Joseph Siror stated that the vandalism especially of energy infrastructure has had detrimental effects on different sectors of the economy.

“Vandalism of energy infrastructure has been rampant and has caused a huge impact on our economy,” Siror said.

Speaking during a consumer dialogue forum against vandalism on Wednesday, Siror highlighted the initiatives taken to arrest vandals across the country while commending the judiciary for the support in ensuring those found guilty are charged.

He said through collaboration with law enforcement agencies such as the National Police Service, National Intelligence Service,  and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, they have managed to arrest 178 vandals between 2022 and 2014

The meeting held at a Nairobi hotel brought together representatives from the Scrap Metal Council (SMC), the Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK), and those from the Ministry of Interior.

“To further reduce vandalism, we as Kenya Power have embarked on initiatives including a collaborative partnership with law enforcement agencies,” he said.

“It is worth commending our judiciary arm of government for its support in ensuring that those found guilty of vandalizing the company facilities are dealt with accordingly,” Siror said

The Kenya Railways security manager Mark Murkomen on his part also urged the public and other stakeholders to protect the national infrastructure.

"Let's play our role to ensure our infrastructure is protected," Murkomen said.
