The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has repossessed public land worth Sh3.2 billion alleged to have been grabbed in Eldoret.

Spokesperson of the commission Erick Ngumbi said the land had allegedly been grabbed by powerful individuals in previous years.

Title deeds that had been issued have since been cancelled, with EACC saing the land belongs to the public.

According to EACC, the alleged grabbers included powerful Kanu regime politicians who have since died.

The repossessed land much of which is located in the Eldoret town CBD includes plots belonging to the Judiciary, Administration Police, Uasin Gishu Referral Hospital, County Fire Station, and County Assembly.

"The land we have recovered was allegedly grabbed using private companies owned by powerful individuals who colluded with corrupt land officials,” Ngumbi said.

The EACC is also investigating 97 other properties worth Sh.7.4  billion  currently in private hands in Eldoret.

"One of the properties that have been recovered is a residential house hosting a judge,” Ngumbi said.

EACC North Rift regional director Charles Rasugu said cases of grabbing public land are increasing in the region.

The officials were speaking in Eldoret during a sensitisation workshop for Kisumu, Vihiga and Elgeyo Marakwet County Assemblies.

The town is set to be elevated to a city status.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii said more land is required for expansion of public facilities in the town.
