An oil tanker involved in a gas explosion on February 5, 2024.

Officials from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority on Sunday ordered the evacuation of people living within Kitengela police station after a lorry that had been driven there with Liquefied Petroleum Gas started to leak.

Police said the officials advised people within a 500-meter radius to evacuate as a safety measure.

Officers raised the alarm asking those near the station to leave their houses causing panic, witnesses said.

The lorry had been involved in an accident along the Nairobi-Namanga highway with a Toyota Landcruiser around 2AM, leaving a driver with injuries.

Police said the trailer was being driven from Isinya towards Kitengela, before colliding head-on with the Landcruiser that was moving on the opposite direction.

This pushed the Landcruiser into a ditch injuring the driver in the head and both hands. He was rushed to St. Paul's Hospital for treatment.

Police later towed the Landcruiser to the station while the trailer was driven there. The truck driver was not injured, police said.

While parked there, officers noticed the gas was leaking, prompting the order to evacuate.

Elsewhere, a matatu tout was killed and 21 passengers injured when a vehicle they were in overturned along Jogoo Road, Nairobi.

Police said the accident involved a Forward Travellers Sacco bus on Saturday morning.

The matatu was heading towards the city centre from Donholm when the driver made an abrupt right turn near Rabai junction, witnesses said.

As a result, the vehicle overturned towards the left, crushing the conductor and killing him on the spot.

Four passengers survived with serious injuries while 17 others escaped with minor injuries, police said. The victims were admitted to hospital.

Police are investigating the accident.
