Hundreds of residents are stuck inside houses at some apartments in Syokimau, Machakos County.

The residents on Sunday had to stay indoors after their residences were flooded due to ongoing rains.

Security agencies led by Athi River deputy county commissioner Patrick Mwangi together with officials from the Machakos county government were at the scene to help find a solution to the tragedy.

Some residents and their families went to the rooftops of the buildings as they watched the flooded water and their properties.

Vehicles were marooned in their parking as those who risked walking in and out of their houses wore gumboots while others sought to be on bare feet.

The situation has cut off the victims from important amenities with the officials chatting ways on how to rescue them from the houses.

Mwangi assured the victims that both national and county governments were jointly doing everything possible including sourcing for choppers to rescue the stuck residents.

Some of the victims who spoke to the Star said the water got into their houses at around 3.00 am Sunday.

The affected victims are occupants of the 290 houses within the apartment.

Emergency services that accompanied the security officials included the Kenya Red Cross and the police.

The victims called for basic support including food and medical services.

Mwangi said the estate was constructed on riparian land.

"We need food, haven't eaten anything since morning," a resident said.
