The death toll from the Mandera food kiosk blast on Monday rose to four as investigations teams embarked on efforts to probe the attack.

Among those who were killed were two police officers and two civilians, police said.

Three died on the spot while a fourth victim succumbed in hospital, officials said.

At least 20 other victims of the blast are nursing wounds in hospitals.

The Improvised Explosive Device is believed to have been planted in the food kiosk on Sunday night and a detonator set on it.

The joint is popular in the area as non-locals flock there for food.

Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif said the gang behind the attack planted the explosive in the joint.

He said the last six years have been calm with almost nil terror-related attacks.

“The last terror incident in Mandera was the abduction of two Cuban doctors on April 12, 2019. Since that unfortunate incident, Mandera town has enjoyed a sustained period of peace and calm. The incident will not deter our tireless efforts and commitment to matters about peace and security,” he said.

“We are working closely with security agencies to pursue those behind this attack and chart a way forward to prevent such incidents from happening again.”

He condemned the attack and vowed to ensure no repeat of the same.

Security officials said the bomb was set up by the militants or their remnants operating in the area.

Police have been staging operations in the region to downgrade the activities of the terrorists.

On Sunday, at least two members of the National Police Reserve were killed in an attack by suspected terrorists in Witu, Lamu.

Police said another reservist was injured in the attack on Saturday night.

The attackers also burnt a house and a motorcycle before stealing foodstuff.

The attack happened in Ziwa la Taa village in Witu, police said.

On Sunday, Kenyan Special Forces staged an ambush on an al Shabaab temporary camp near the Kenya border past Hagardera refugee camp.

Officials said two al Shabaab fighters were critically injured but managed to escape.

During the successful operation, the team recovered Improvised Explosive Devices making materials, an AK47 rifle, two magazines, porches and assorted foodstuffs.

At least three experts in assembling the explosives managed to escape, police said.
