A family is mourning after their one-year-old boy drowned in a basin full of water in their house in Ruai, Nairobi.

The mother of the child told police she had left the boy in the house on Sunday, March 10 at night playing.

There was, however a basin full of water in the house.

The woman said she went out for a long call and on coming back she found the body of the child in the water.

He had drowned in the water. She raised an alarm for help but it was too late.

The mother rushed the child to Precious Life Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police visited the scene and helped to move the body to the mortuary pending an investigation.

The incident left the mother devastated, witnesses said.

In the Matondoni area, Lamu County, a two-year-old boy drowned in the Indian Ocean.

The boy was playing with his friends in the water when the incident happened on Saturday evening.

The boy was rushed to a local dispensary where he was pronounced dead while being attended to.

The body was later Sunday released to the family for burial as per Muslim tradition.

In another case, tragedy struck Shimbo Secondary School in Wundanyi on Saturday when a Form Three student drowned while swimming at the Kishenyi dam in Taita Taveta.

After an hours-long underwater search by local divers, the body was found on Sunday.

According to some eyewitnesses, the deceased was heard calling for help after being overwhelmed by the water.

Police said the 17-year-old student had gone to swim in the company of his fellow students when he drowned.

According to officials, the students had just finished attending their afternoon classes when they decided to go to the dam.

Authorities were informed of the incident and launched investigations into the same.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a suspected suicide incident of a woman whose body was found on a tree in the Kamulu area, Nairobi.

The body was Sunday found along Reflector Road, Green View area, police and witnesses said.

Police officers rushed to the scene and found the body of the woman and on a quick search, a national identity card bearing the name Angwang Dorothy Achieng was found in the handbag the deceased had.

No suicide note was found. Police are investigating if it was a suicide case or a murder staged as a suicide.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending investigation and autopsy.
