Residents of Kikopey in Gilgil were on Thursday trying to come to terms with a shocking attack in which a 30-year-old man killed his estranged wife by slitting her throat.

During the incident in one of the lodgings, the man who had travelled from Eldoret stabbed himself on the chest and stomach in a suspected suicide attempt.

The suspect, who is fighting for his life in hospital, had travelled for close to 200km to convince the 23-year-old woman to return home, only to turn against her.

Sakina Mohammed from Lifebloom International Services said the couple parted ways last year, forcing the mother of one to relocate to Gilgil.

The man had visited her on several occasions trying to convince her to return home but the woman was adamant until Wednesday evening when the attack occurred.

“The man lured her into one of the lodgings so that they could talk and resolve their differences but he turned against her, slitting her throat and abdomen,” Mohammed said.

The activist, who is involved in supporting abused minors and women, said that workers who heard the woman’s screams called the police who arrived to find the man bleeding profusely.

Gilgil Deputy County Commissioner Willy Cheboi confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been referred to Nakuru for specialised treatment.

“Police have launched investigations into the incident as they wait for the suspect to recover so that he can record a statement and shed more light on this incident,” he said.

Meanwhile, a man who splashed his wife with boiling water and later stabbed her in the stomach following a domestic row in Naivasha has been arrested.

The former police officer currently working with the Nakuru government as enforcement officer was arrested in Naivasha town after a week of hiding from the police.

Last week, the man allegedly boiled water and splashed it on his wife who was asleep before stabbing her, leaving part of her internal organs hanging out.

According to John Kinuthia from Naivasha Gender-Based Networking Cluster, the arrest was timely as the suspect had threatened the victim, who is admitted at Naivasha Subcounty Hospital.

“We thank the police for moving in and arresting the suspect who has been chest-thumping, claiming that he could not be arrested and we hope the victim will get justice,” Kinuthia said.
