Athletics Integrity Unit suspends Kigen for doping allegations

Kigen was found to have allegedly used a prohibited substance following tests that were carried out.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has provisionally suspended Kenyan marathoner Nobert Kigen for doping allegations.

In a statement, the AIU said Kigen has already been issued with a Notice of Allegation following the Presence/Use of Prohibited Substances (Testosterone) a violation of Article 2.1 and Article 2.2.

Kigen was among the athletes enlisted to participate in Sunday’s Tokyo Marathon but was a no-show following the development.

Kenya’s Benson Kipruto won the Tokyo race in a course record time of 2:02:16, leading a Kenyan clean sweep of the medals that had Timothy Kiplagat (2:02:55) and Vincent Kipkemoi (2:04:18).

Kigen’s last race was the 2024 Xiamen International Marathon on January 7, where he finished 10th in 2:13:35.

He has personal bests of 2:05:13 from the 2017 Amsterdam Marathon and 59:42 from the 2016 Praha Half Marathon.

The AIU also suspended Agnes Mueni following the alleged 'presence/use of prohibited substances (Testosterone, Trimetazidine)'.

Under a provisional suspension, athletes are restricted from competition until a verdict is delivered, which could be an acquittal or a ban.
