A futurism art is on display at the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi.

The art by Kairos Futura, an art futurist organisation based in the Industrial Area in Nairobi, seeks to highlight the conservation of the Elgon Teak at the global event.

Futurism was an Italian art movement of the early twentieth century that aimed to capture in art the dynamism and energy of the modern world.

Ajax Axe, a director at Kairos Futura said her organisation was displaying a futuristic art dubbed “A sit at the Table”.

“The concept was to think of a way to make a metaphor for multi-lateral environmentalism. We used 350 school desks and chairs to symbolise the coming generation and how the decisions we make now will impact them and how we can create or not create a legacy for the future together,” Axe stated.

She explained that the structure is designed to be like a maze because multilateral cooperation can be very difficult to navigate.

“Inside you will find messages that will be an inspiration on what could be possible in the future and also our fears of environmentalism,” she added.

At the centre of the maze, there are desks where people can sit and write their hopes and fears of environmentalism. Their messages are displayed on a digital screen at the entry

Over 5,000 delegates from the 193 United Nations (UN) Member States, including Heads of State and Government are attending UNEA-6 that ends on March 1, 2024.

Experts, activists, and industry representatives will also participate in the event.

Every two years, all 193 UN Member States convene to collectively address critical environmental challenges facing the planet.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipa Tuya said the meeting is timely as the world is facing threats of pollution and waste, biodiversity loss and climate change.

She said the meeting will build on the outcome of last year’s Africa Climate Summit.

“As the world’s highest environmental decision-making body, UNEA can address these issues through collective thinking and global actions that focus on diverse aspects of the environment,” the CS said in a supplement in the local dailies.

This sixth edition of UNEA follows a previous event held in Nairobi from February 28 to March 2, 2022, which concluded with the adoption of 14 resolutions aimed at halting the progression of the triple planetary crisis and advancing actions for nature to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
