Machakos family seeks justice after son, 3, dies in accident

Police said the minor was crushed to death on Friday after he fell from a school bus.

A family in Syokimau in Machakos County is crying for justice following the death of their three-year-old son through a road accident.

According to police, Kiproto Mutual Liam, a pupil at a private school within Katani area in Mlolongo Division, died after he was crushed by a school bus on Friday, February 9, 2024.

The deceased's mother, Mercy Nasirembe, said her son left home for school as usual and was to be dropped back home by the school bus that crushed him.

"He never came. My son never came back to us," Nasirembe said.

She said she was called by the school's administration and informed that her son had been involved in an accident.

"I rushed to the scene only to find my son dead. They called me to see my son dead on the road. As a family, we have tried asking the school to come clear on this matter, but the principal has gone mute on us," Nasirembe said.

Athi River South subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi said the incident happened on Friday at around 5pm.

The incident was reported to Athi River police station as a fatal injury road traffic accident.

"The incident happened at Katani area off road tarmac road (Seme Ngilani road) involving a pupil namely Kiproto Mutual Liam aged three years and one motor vehicle Isuzu mini bus," Mudavadi told the Star on Sunday.

He added: "It happened that the said school bus had carried pupils and it was on its way dropping kids on various destinations and on reaching the scene of accident, the co-driver's door which was not properly locked opened and the deceased fell down and was ran over by the rear tyre. He sustained serious injuries and died on the spot. The scene was visited and the body moved to Shalom Community hospital mortuary."

The vehicle was driven to Athi River police station where it was detained  awaiting inspection.

The vehicle's driver was also arrested following the incident and later released on a Sh30,000 police bail.

An autopsy was conducted on the body at Shalom Community hospital mortuary on Sunday, February 11, 2024.
