Three Ethiopians die in Meru accident while being smuggled

The menace of human smuggling turned ugly when three of the victims from Ethiopia died in an accident in Meru.

Eight other victims were seriously injured and rushed to Kanyakine and St Ann’s Hospital, police said.

The incident happened Wednesday night, police said adding it involved two salon cars.

The smugglers were ferrying 10 Ethiopians in a Probox car when their vehicle collided with another one head-on.

Police said the vehicle with the foreigners was headed towards Nkubu town.

The area is among areas flagged as smuggling routes.

The injured were being attended to at a hospital while the bodies were moved to the mortuary.

Elsewhere in Garbatulla, Isiolo, police intercepted eight Ethiopians who were being ferried to Nairobi.

They were on board motorcycles and were being escorted by armed men when they were intercepted on Tuesday evening, police said.

Seven others managed to escape.

This was after the smugglers engaged the police in a shootout.

In Loglogo, Marsabit, along the Marsabit-Isiolo Highway within Malgis police engaged another group of smugglers engaged police in a shootout.

One of the smuggled people was shot and seriously wounded in the stomach.

This happened at a roadblock manned by a multi-agency team.

Police said 25 Ethiopians were intercepted at the scene and escorted to the local police station.

The injured was taken to hospital, police said.

Police say this is part of the main organized crime that is being perpetuated in the area.

Security chiefs say they made major strides in January in the war on organized crime.

The crimes include drug trafficking, human trafficking, poaching, rape, murder and robbery with violence.
