The streets of Nairobi city remained congested Tuesday as children returned to schools for the first term after a long holiday.
Bus stops became packed with students most of them accompanied by their parents and guardians awaited impatiently for their riders.
The air was filled with the sound of chatter and laughter, a stark contrast to the quiet streets of the holiday season.
At major shopping outlets, including other major towns, the situation was the same as several others engaged in last-minute shopping.
Despite the congestion, however, there was an undeniable sense of excitement and anticipation in the air as the new school year began.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said Monday that capitation has already been disbursed quelling fears of possible disruption of the learning process.
“I would want to assure our schools, assure our head teachers, assure our principals that yes we have released capitations,” he said during the release of 2023 KCSE results.
He added, “It’s not in your accounts today, it’s a process, it could be in your account maybe today or tomorrow. I want to assure it’s on the process".
Treasury announced last week that it had released Sh31 billion.
This was after Azimio leader Raila Odinga threatened legal action to compel the government to release the funds.
He argued that the delay would have negative impacts as schools prepare to reopen.
