Multi-agency teams are investigating the origin of an unexploded Rocket Propelled Grenade in a village in Lafey, Mandera.

The ordinance was discovered by a herder who was grazing his animals in Jabibar on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

It seemed to have been at the scene for a few days as it was rusting.

The scene was secured and experts called to detonate it even as the probe went on.

It is believed the explosive was launched but failed to explode on its unknown target.

The area is near the Kenya-Somalia border which is usually breached by al Shabaab terrorists.

The terrorists have been staging attacks in the area rendering it inhabitable.

This has affected development in general with little cooperation from residents.

Officials say more security agents have been deployed to the area to tame planned attacks.

The attacks have forced the government to suspend a plan to reopen the border that was closed in 2011.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said in October Kenya has declared an all-out war on dangerously armed terrorists linked to the al Shabaab militants who bear the greatest responsibility for the atrocious murder of civilians and security personnel along the border region in recent times.

“While numerous plots by the al Shabaab and its network have been uncovered and neutralized ahead of time, several of the attacks have succeeded, resulting in the brutal killing of innocent civilians and security personnel,” he said.
