The Kenya National Examination Council has come out to address a case where most learners in a school in Isiolo scored 75 marks in Science in KCPE examination results released Wednesday.

Knec CEO David Njengere said on Saturday they have studied the KCPE examination results for the school.

Brainstar Schools' results circulated on social media forums indicate that most of the candidates attained similar marks in Science.

"Knec has reviewed the results for the school and all the reports that were received from the examination centres and anonymous letters and has not found any indication that the school was involved in examination malpractices," Njengere said.

He explained that there was no examination malpractice in this case since Science is a multiple-choice question paper thus making it possible for the candidates to get identical marks.

Njengere said though the incident may be assumed to be an examination irregularity, it is not adequate evidence for Knec to sanction the results for candidates without a supporting report that cheating happened during the administration of examination.

Further, Njengere addressed the errors in results that were being noted from the SMS code.

He said that only the SMS code results have errors and not the results that were uploaded on the Knec portal.

The Knec boss noted that they have received appeals from some affected schools on dissatisfaction with their results as received by candidates and schools via the SMS code 40054.

"The errors affected only the SMS results due to configuration issues, as the results in the KNEC portal are accurate," Njengere said.

He said Knec notified the SMS service provider and the error in the text messages was resolved immediately.

Njengere said it was brought to the attention of Knec that results for some candidates had a misalignment of the marks and grades in Kiswahili as they were placed in the Kenyan Sign Language.

He said there were also cases where the grades in Science and Social Studies and Religious Education were truncated incorrectly and were missing the plus (+) and minus (-) signs as expected.

"Knec also received queries from candidates with low marks in some of the subjects, mainly in English and Kiswahili."

Njengere said Knec has reviewed all the appeals and found that there were 133 candidates affected.

"These cases have all been addressed and results for the affected candidates updated appropriately," he said.

The CEO advised that learners visit their schools to get their provisional results as the SMS ones have some errors.

"Candidates have been advised to visit their schools and collect the official provisional results slips and raise any query for review of their results, if any, within the stipulated 30 days period," Njengere said.
