The Kenya National Highways Authority has begun repair works at the Mbogolo bridge on Mombasa-Kilifi highway after it collapsed following heavy rains that caused flooding.

In a statement via its X platform on Saturday, Kenha said water levels at the site have slightly subsided.

The authority said that it estimates opening flow of traffic in the area within the next 24 hours.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority hereby notifies the public that water levels have slightly subsided at the Mbogolo Bridge. Kenha has started works to restore in earnest with backfilling of the washout sections. The authority estimates to open flow of traffic within 24 hours," they said.

The Mombasa-Malindi highway was on Saturday morning rendered impassable after a section of the Mbogolo bridge was washed away by raging floods.

The road was totally cut off after floods destroyed the approach road on the Mombasa side.

Another section of the highway was submerged in water and rendered impassable at Mtondia a few kilometers from Kilifi town.

Vehicles were forced to drop passengers near the bridge and walk on foot through another bridge that is under construction.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had issued a traffic advisory and announced the closure of the road.

"KeNHA informs the public that Mbogolo Bridge on Mtwapa - Kilifi (A7) Road has been cut off. The cut of this bridge disrupts traffic to and from Mombasa. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route of Mombasa-Mazeras-Kaloleni -Mavueni-Kilifi Road," KeNHA said.

"Currently, new bridge is being constructed in this area as part of the Kwa Kadzengo-Kilifi Road Project."

President William Ruto on Friday condoled with families that have lost their loved ones from the ongoing heavy rains as a result of El Nino.

He said the government will act to secure Kenyans during the ongoing heavy rains.

"We condole with the families of the victims of the ongoing intense downpour and flooding in some parts of the country," the President said.
