Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has explained the cadre of police to be deployed in the Haiti Mission.

Speaking during a Joint Sitting with National Assembly and Senate Committees on Thursday, Koome said there will be three types of officers being deployed.

There will be a team that will form the headquarters (100), Formed police units and platoon commanders.

In the headquarters team, Kenya will deploy the Overall commander of the mission, an officer not below the assistant commander of police and Chief of personnel.

Others are; Chief of operations, the chief of staff, Chief of logistics.

Remaining 96 personnel forms part of headquarter team (Statcom, intelligence, investigations and other technical agencies)

Under the Formed-up police units, Kenya will deploy five superintendent officers and five deputy-formed police commanders.

Others are; Support service officers, Police Intelligence Officer, Operations officers, Duty officers and Liaison officers all totalling 25.

For Platoon commanders; Kenya will deploy five platoon commanders that has 25 chief Inspectors.

Others are; Deputy Platoon commanders that has 25 Inspectors, Platoon sergeants, 25 Senior sergeants, 135 Corporals and 655 Constables.

"This should total 1000 police officers to be deployed for the mission, he said.

Koome said the police officers would be Providing overall command of the mission.

“Kenya to be the lead country in this mission and the Haiti team will follow suit,” he said.

He said they will issue monthly reports on the mission to ensure they keep tabs on what's happening in the foreign country.

Earlier, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said the government requires Sh36bn to prepare some of the police officers earmarked for Haiti deployment.

Kindiki clarified the monies spent on the preparation will be refunded once they get the green light to deploy.

"Our officers will not leave until resources and equipment are available. And we shall refund the monies up to the last of it," he said.

Cabinet approved the deployment of 1,000 police officers to Haiti jumping one more legal hurdle in the circuitous approvals needed to have the move get legal backing.

A dispatch from the State House in Nairobi said the country’s council of ministers had approved the deployment which will now head to Parliament for the needed ratification.

The decision by the government to send the troops has been seen as controversial and a lawyer had already gone to court seeking to stop the deployment altogether.

The High Court had earlier suspended plans for deployment, temporarily, after the lawyer argued there had been no Cabinet decision on it and that Parliament was being bypassed.
