Detectives are currently investigating an incident in which one tout was fatally stabbed by another during a dispute over passengers along Tom Mboya Street in Nairobi.
The touts involved belong to different matatu saccos that operate on the same routes, according to the police.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening following an argument between the two touts over space to pick up passengers heading to the Kasarani route.
Jairus Nyutu Nuthu, a 31-year-old tout, bled to death after being stabbed in the neck.
The assailant, who police believe works for a Sacco operating on the Nairobi-Mwiki-Kasarani route, fled the scene and has not been apprehended.
The altercation escalated to violence when one of the touts grabbed a knife from a nearby hawker selling eggs and smokies and used it to stab his colleague.
According to police reports, the assailant had been following his colleague for some distance before initiating the fight that led to the stabbing.
The attacker dropped the weapon and made his escape, leaving Nyutu Nuthu fatally wounded.
Nairobi's police boss, Adamson Bungei, confirmed that no arrests had been made yet, and efforts to locate the assailant were ongoing.
"The fighting started at the Mwiki-Kasarani-Matatu stop along Tom Mboya Street before they ended up at the location where the stabbing occurred," Bungei said.
The murder weapon was recovered at the scene, and Nyutu Nuthu's body has been taken to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Conflicts over passenger pickup locations are a common issue among matatu groups, often requiring police intervention.
Police have blamed the trend on lack of discipline on the operators.
Officials said a meeting is planned for all users of the contentious bus stop to agree on how to operate.
Meanwhile, a three-year-old boy died in a tragic incident on a ladder he had used to climb on a miraa tree in Kirua, Meru County.
The child’s parents reported the boy had climbed the ladder up to the miraa tree as he copied what he has been witnessing before he slipped and fell but hanged on his shirt.
The shirt hooked up at the ladder choking the boy.
His body was discovered on the ladder long after he had died. His parents said they were not present when the incident happened.
Police were called to the scene and picked up the body to the mortuary pending autopsy and probe.
