The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) is one of the gainers in the 2023-24 Budget presented in Parliament on Thursday by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u.

The agency has been allocated Sh3.9 billion, an increase of Sh600 million, from its current budget.

This, according to Ndung’u, will help boost its operations especially in the fight against the corruption in the country.

The money will cover development and recurrent expenses.

The allocation to the Judiciary on the other hand has been increased by Sh3 billion from the 2022-23 budget to Sh22.1 billion.

Other agencies critical to the criminal justice system which include the Office of the Director of public prosecutions have had their allocations increased by Sh400 million to Sh3.6 billion.

Sh8 billion has been allocated to the Criminal Investigations Services while the Office of the Auditor General is set to get Sh7.9 billion up from Sh6.4 billion.

The increase in allocation is in line with Kenya Kwanza’s pledge to strengthen and institutionalise the independence of various agencies in the system.

During the launch of the State of the Judiciary and the Administration of Justice annual report last November, President Ruto promised to increase the allocation to the Judiciary by at least Sh3 billion annually for the next five years.

He stated that he will remain committed to his promise to empower the judiciary and the criminal justice system by facilitating their funding and independence.

“We have committed to increasing it (budget) by Sh3 billion to make sure we also hire the requisite number of staff and build ICT facilities so that our Judiciary can deliver its mandate,” he said.

“We intend to increase to empower the judiciary and the criminal justice system as required by the constitution as well as respect the decisions and orders of the courts as they relate to the executive.”
