Nominated MP Naomi Waqo has said the government's financial situation is in a bad state.

Waqo said the government is leading a 'hand-to-mouth' lifestyle as the revenue collected is not enough to run the economy.

She spoke on Thursday during an interview with K24.

Waqo said whatever revenue the government collects is immediately put to use.

"What we are collecting today will be used tomorrow or even today evening.  It is like living from hand to mouth. You collect and it is used immediately," she said.

Waqo however said even though the government has not been collecting adequate revenue, it ensures that what is collected is enough to sustain the nation.

She went on to give assurance that the nation will only be in a 'hand-to-mouth situation' for only a short while.

Additionally, she said the financial situation is tough because the current regime is not keen on borrowing.

"President William Ruto has categorically said he is not keen on borrowing," she said.

She also noted that Kenyans do not trust the government to be accountable for their taxes.

Waqo said many don't trust the government now because of a report by former President Uhuru Kenyatta that the country used to lose Sh2 billion on a daily basis.

She said unlike in the past regime where there was enough money that the country would lose Sh2 billion per day, the incumbent regime is struggling to collect enough revenue to run the economy.

This comes as the President is attempting to widen the tax base through the proposed Finance Bill 2023.

Many have come out to speak against the move to tax Kenyans more saying it will increase financial burdens for many.
