President William Ruto has said the Kenya Kwanza government will collaborate with the Mau Mau elders in exhuming the remains of Dedan Kimathi.

Speaking during the funeral service of Mama Mukami Kimathi, Ruto said that Kimathi was embarrassedly buried yet he fought for the freedom of the country.

"The government will collaborate with the elders to look for the remains of Kimathi," he said.

"He was buried without dignity. We will look for the remains, and accord Dedan Kimathi the burial he deserves."

He said Kimathi deserves all the respect as he fought for the freedom of the people of Kenya.

His announcement came after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua urged him to allow the exhumation of the body.

Gachagua said the elders know where his remains are.

"Tunakuomba kwa heshima, huskize kilio cha MauMau, hawa wazee wanasema wanajua pahali Kimathi alizikwa, ukikubali uwapatie nafasi, watuonyeshe mahali ako,  tumpee mazishi ya kiheshima," he said.

(We urge you with all respect, to listen to the cry of the elders, these men say they know where Dedan Kimathi was buried, if you agree, let them show us where the grave is at so that we can give him a decent send-off)
