Indonesia is set to showcase her culture in its first ever trade expo in Nairobi on May 13.

The country's Information, Social and Culture Affairs Counselor at Indonesian Embassy Andi Usman said the Indonesia-Nairobi inaugural expo will take place at the Trademark Hotel in Nairobi.

Usman said the expo will not only showcase Indonesia's rich culture, but also the best of Indonesian export products and scholarship opportunities to Kenyan businesses and academic circle.

"The expo aims to promote Indonesian exports and offer Kenyan students and youth opportunities to pursue higher education in Indonesia," he said.

Usman said the expo will foster cultural exchange, mutual understanding and in-person contact between the two countries.

It will feature a variety of exhibitors from small and medium enterprises up to major exporters of food and beverages, herbal medicine, packaging industry and logistics from Indonesia.

Usman said there is increased interest from Indonesian businessmen to invest in Kenya.

But since many businessmen know not much about Kenya, "it is why we are holding the expo so that businessmen from Indonesia can see the opportunities in Kenya."

The decision to have the expo in Kenya was arrived at due to the strategic positioning of the Port of Mombasa.

"Kenya's location is strategic to us due its port in Mombasa. Access to Kenya means access to many other countries in Africa," Usman  said.

He said the expo will offer a range of activities including trade seminars, education fair seminar, cultural workshops, Indonesian cultural performances.

There will also be traditional dancing and the Indonesian Pencak Silat martial art and self defence showcase.

"Should visitors need to have a private business meeting with Indonesian exhibitors or universities, the Embassy will provide meeting rooms at their disposal," Usman  said.

He said Kenyan students seeking higher education in Indonesia also have a chance to acquire scholarships and interact with with representatives of leading universities in Indonesia.
