A section of MCAs has launched a bid to end what they termed as "unfair" and "poor" treatment of ward representatives.
Kinanie MCA Francis Wambua in a statement said the members of the county assembly feel mistreated on various issues including salaries.
"While the role of MCAs is passing laws, being the voice of the voiceless through representation, oversight executive leaders of their counties, their work is often undervalued, underappreciated and underfunded," Wambua said.
The ward rep went ahead and gave a breakdown of the salaries of Members of the county assembly.
According to the data, speakers receive Sh525,525, deputy speaker walks away with Sh216,563 and MCAs get Sh144,375 as gross salary monthly.
Wambua said this underpayment has occasioned poor oversight of Governors as most MCAs are forced to be puppets of county bosses in order to get an extra coin.
"The MCAs have also revealed that they can't effectively oversight governors who earn millions while the MCAs have big titles but earn salaries lower than deputy directors in county governments," he said.
Further, he faulted the County Assemblies Forum for failing to ensure the recognition of its members.
He called for the formation of the County Assemblies Service Commission to evaluate their concerns.
"They believe the formation of the new commission will be a game changer for MCAs and they are committed to fighting for their rights," he said.
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai backed his counterpart saying ward representatives are the worst paid.
"Before the governors push for their wives to be paid and funded they must remember we are the worst paid," he said.
He said some MCAs have served for more than 30 years with no pension while other elected leaders get pension after service.
"If you give me Sh109,000 per four months to pay office and staff how do I do that in Kileleshwa, Kilimani, Westlands, Kitisuru? How is that possible?" Alai posed.
