Police are looking for a suspect believed to be the owner of an unlicensed alcohol business in Thika.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a statement on their Facebook page said efforts to arrest the suspect are at an advanced stage.

Officers from the DCI raided the establishment on Thursday as part of the government's effort to crack down on illicit alcohol in the country.

During the raid, a consignment of alcoholic drinks alleged to be bearing fake KRA stamps was recovered at Makongeni estate in a go-down in the area.

In a raid conducted by detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit assisted by KRA officials, two drums of ethanol and more than 200 cartons of different brands all affixed with alleged KRA Counterfeit stamps were recovered.

The goods seized are estimated to cost Sh5.94 million.

“Also impounded was an illegal bottling machine, half a roll of counterfeit KRA stamps and 36,000 pieces of the same,” the DCI said.

“Assorted empty bottles, cartons, caps and drums were also recovered. The products were seized and a notice of offence serial number 7700 was issued. The bottling plant was also dismantled,” the DCI added.

This is barely hours after KRA and DCI officers from the Economic and Commercial Crime Unit seized an illegal consignment of cigarettes worth Sh32 million in Nairobi.

The items were netted at a palatial home at Maziwa Estate along Riara Road following a tip-off from a whistleblower.

KRA officials said they have been following leads of fake cigarette dealings for two months now after they got wind of the smuggling through the Busia-Kitale border points.
