Chief Justice Martha Koome has said the Judiciary is committed to serving as the hub for African judiciaries' dialogue on climate change in the region.

Koome was speaking at the 3rd regional symposium on greening judiciaries in Africa that is currently ongoing at the Safari Park Hotel.

She said the judiciaries across the continent are united by a shared commitment to protecting and preserving our precious environment.

“We view hosting regional judiciaries dialogues as a means of fostering the development of an African jurisprudence that is responsive to the unique concerns and aspirations of our continent,” she said.

Koome said the three-in-one symposium on climate change as part of the regional judicial dialogue is aimed at providing a platform for African judges and judicial officers to exchange ideas, learn from each other and acquire the requisite knowledge, skills, and tools needed to effectively address the challenges facing our continent.

“Our people, our economies, and our natural resources are all at risk, as we grapple with the devastating consequences of rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, and the loss of biodiversity,” she said.

She also emphasised that our courts must play a decisive role in driving the adaptation, mitigation, and resilience-building efforts required to combat climate change and secure a sustainable future for our people.

“We have a unique responsibility to ensure that our decisions and judgments contribute to a greener, more resilient, and more sustainable Africa,” she said.

Koome has also reaffirmed their commitment to the cause of environmental justice and pledged unwavering support for the efforts of the respective judiciaries in combating climate change.

“Together, we can make a difference, and together, we can build a brighter, more sustainable future for our continent and our people,” she said.
