In courts today: Judgement on Garissa university attackers to be delivered

Wheels of Justice: Court cases lined up for the day

In Summary
  • The three were found guilty by the then Milimani chief magistrate Francis Andayi but appealed to the High court.
  • Mohammed Abikar, Hassan Edin Hassan and Tanzanian Rashid Charles Mberesero were found guilty of the 2015 attack.

The High Court will today pass judgment on three attackers convicted in the Garissa University terrorist attack.

The three were found guilty by the then Milimani chief magistrate Francis Andayi but appealed to the High court.

Mohammed Abikar, Hassan Edin Hassan and Tanzanian Rashid Charles Mberesero were found guilty of the 2015 attack.

The fourth suspect Sahar Diriye was however acquitted.

Mberesero was given a life sentence, while the two others were handed a 41-year jail sentence.

The attack killed 148 and left 83 people with serial injuries.

Twenty two witnesses testified against them, including students who survived the attack.

Separately, the high court will also mention a case in which former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko seeks to amend his petition where he has sued Azimio leader Raila Odinga over the Monday demonstrations.

The matter was to be mentioned on Thursday but Justice Hedwig Ong'undi pushed it to today.

Sonko in the amended petition before the Milimani Law courts says the unlawful public demonstrations were disguised as ‘economic protests’, yet they are ‘bitter political expressions of disaffection at Raila’s loss in the August 2022 presidential elections’.

The same he says is evidenced by how he has encouraged and permitted the chants of “Ruto must go” during what he terms "unlawful public gatherings".

Odinga called for the protests to pressure the government to address their concerns on the high cost of living and opening of IEBC servers claiming the 2022 election was stolen.
