A man died in Siandha village in Ramula, Gem-Wagai subcounty on Thursday evening after the walls of a goldmine caved in.

George Otieno Odula, 22, was going about his artisanal duties around 6:00 pm when the shaft buried him alive.

His colleagues immediately embarked on a rescue mission until about six hours later when his lifeless body was retrieved.

The incident was confirmed by East Gem Location Chief George Salala.

“The body of Odula was retrieved and taken to Yala Subcounty Hospital Mortuary awaiting a postmortem,” Salala said.

The administrator urged gold mining artisans to be cautious enough and wear protective gear to avoid loss of lives.
