Primary schools have opted for cheaper means to have laboratories which are to be used by Grade 7 learners.
The schools have partnered with a state agency to modify the structures, across the country.
School Equipment Production Unit (SEPU) has undertaken the procedure in several schools.
The Star also visited one of the schools-Muguga Green Primary School in Westlands where the process was ongoing.
"We have 81 Grade 7 students and once modified, the lab can accommodate 40 learners per lesson," James Ndiritu the school headteacher told the Star.
The structure was an old lab that had not been in use, it had cabinets, a metal sink and two doors.
The production unit has installed two modern black coloured sinks with functional taps at the teachers' working station.
The storage cabinets were also fitted with new wooden doors, and three white tables to act as a centrepiece.
Further, the team set up working stations with two fire outlets.
According to SEPU some of the schools include Nabeel Integrated School in Tala, The Orchard School in Kitengela, Precious Blood Riruta and Komboyoo Girls Secondary School.
The government received financial grants that will help in the construction of laboratories in primary schools.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu said the laboratories will be used by the Grade 7 learners.
“The money will be used for infrastructure development. We require laboratories for JSS,” Machogu said last month.
He was at Nairobi Primary Junior secondary school where he monitored the distribution of books and admission of Grade 7 learners.
“Twenty-five per cent of the capitation represents 4,000 per student,” he said.
"Part of capitation funds will go towards the construction of laboratories."
